We are seeking a motivated and talented Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team and drive the design and development of our groundbreaking wind-powered ship class. In this role, you will collaborate with a dynamic group of engineers, naval architects, and researchers to develop cutting-edge mechanical systems for our wind-powered ship class.

Your Tasks

  • Develop the ground station (including the launching and retrieving system) for the kite propulsion of our wind-powered ships, ensuring they meet performance, safety, and reliability requirements.
  • Develop detailed mechanical designs for the ground station, including structural components, mechanisms, and subsystems.
  • Create 3D models and detailed drawings using CAD software (in SolidWorks) and participate in prototyping and testing of core mechanical components.
  • Conduct engineering calculations and strength analyses (FEM) (with the SolidWorks toolbox) to optimize mechanical designs for efficiency and durability.
  • Define requirements for the ground station and identify and select suitable suppliers for the system.
  • Coordinate internal and external multi-disciplinary project stakeholders (naval architecture, embedded, control engineering).
  • Manage the entire design lifecycle from concept to production.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical documentation, including design specifications, CAD models, and engineering drawings.
  • Prepare comprehensive design documentation, including specifications, test reports, and user manuals, also for class approval.
  • Ensure designs adhere to relevant industry standards and regulatory requirements (from class societies).
Your Profile
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture or related field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in mechanical engineering, preferably in onboard equipment (e.g. cranes, heavy-lift equipment) or airborne wind energy systems.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) and FEA (Finite Element Analysis) .
  • Experience in developing, designing, manufacturing and testing complex, reliable products from scratch.
  • Strong competencies in designing and integrating hydraulic systems.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical principles, structural analysis, and material properties.
  • Passion for heavy machinery, such as cranes, excavators or similar.
  • Network to and experience in working with system suppliers.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a hands-on, results-oriented approach.
  • Motivated, independent and reliable way of working.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration in a young and dedicated team.
  • Ability to adapt and thrive in a fast-paced startup environment. 
  • Willingness to travel to perform hardware tests at different locations.
  • Kitesurfing, paragliding or sailing experience (including associated certificates: SBF/ SKS) is a plus.
  • Proficient German skills are a plus.
  • EU work permit (CargoKite does not provide any visa sponsorship for this role).
